WEASEL ROBOT

by @ . Filed under Electronic, Robot

Weasel is a tenacious little robot warrior that embodies two sensors that allow it to “see” a line or “feel” its way along walls and around corners. The two motors and contact sensor activate the wall sensing micro switch to control the motors’ on/off operation that determines the path of a wall. It is the classic robot design using the “Left Hand Rule” to escape mazes. With OWI’s continued pursuit in making robots “smart”, they have added an additional feature to this little bundle of energy… a sonic tracking system. Underneath Weasel’s sturdy plastic base, you will discover photo- transistors that enable it to detect and follow a black line. Wow! Weasel still has more features! Want… speed? Well, its three-speed gearbox will help navigate at the velocity you determine.

Quick and easy to assemble, this is a beginner robot that make great entrants for robotic competitions, robotic workshops, after-school programs, special events, gifts, science enrichment camps, and classroom activities.

PARALLAX BOE-BOT KIT

by @ . Filed under Electronic, Robot

The ever-popular Boe-Bot(R) Full Kit is now available with a USB-compatible Board of Education (BOE) - at no additional cost to the consumer! Programming the BASIC Stamp via USB is an elegant solution for laptops and newer PCs which have no serial ports (no more adapters required!). USB driver installation instructions are available for download on the USB Board of Education page.

We’re particularly proud of Andy Lindsay’s new Robotics with the Boe-Bot text. The Robotics text includes 41 new activities for the Boe-Bot robot with structured PBASIC 2.5 source code support and bonus challenges with solutions in each chapter. Starting with basic movement and proceeding to sensor-based projects, customers quickly learn how the Boe-Bot is expandable for many different robotic projects. No previous robotics, electronics or programming experience is necessary. View the improvements for an overview of what’s new, or download the Robotics text below to review our documentation. Parallax offers the most complete, clear and interesting support for this kit. Over 90,000 Boe-Bot robots are in use by hobbyists, educators and students around the world, which provided lots of feedback for improvements to this popular kit along the way.

The Boe-Bot robot is built on a high-quality brushed aluminum chassis that provides a sturdy platform for the continuous rotation servo motors and BASIC Stamp’s USB Board of Education. Many mounting holes and slots may be used to add custom robotic equipment or off-the-shelf Parallax add-ons. The rear wheel is a slider ball held in place with a cotter pin. Drive wheels are molded to fit precisely on the servo spline and held in place with a small screw.

What really makes the Boe-Bot unique is the BASIC Stamp micro controller’s flexibility of programming when coupled with breadboard circuit construction. Following along in Robotics with the Boe-Bot, users quickly learn about embedded projects, from wiring and components to programming and mechanical dependencies. The kit includes a set of passive components (wires, resistors, capacitors), sensors (photo resistors, bumpers, infrared sensors) and hardware (whisker touch-sensor kit) to complete the different projects.

The Boe-Bot robot takes about 1-2 hours to put together, though each project in the Robotics text provides a unique new experience of wiring and source code tuning. Completing the entire set of projects takes 50 hours and is suitable for anybody over 12 years of age. The USB Board of Education (and BS2-IC) may also be removed to be used as your platform for the other kits in the Stamps in Class series.

After mastering the basics, Boe-Bot add-ons let you branch out into new activities, such as making your Boe-Bot talk with a speech board, adding infrared remote control, maze contests, line following, interfacing direction sensors, and using RF modules and video/camera equipment to build a Video-Bot. Boe-Bot accessories are all sold separately, and are available through the Robot Accessories page below.

FUEL CELL CAR KIT

by @ . Filed under Uncategorized

A Science Kit for the 21st Century!

Assemble and Experiment with a Unique Reversible Fuel Cell

This new Thames & Kosmos Fuel Cell Kit provides a playful introduction to one of the most significant technologies of the 21st Century. With this kit you can build a model car that actually runs on water!

Pour in the water and watch it separate into hydrogen and oxygen, forming a gas to power your vehicle across the floor. Now that we have your attention, roll up your sleeves and find out more through experiments and demonstrations you can do on your own, in a classroom or with friends.

Fuel cells are one of the most promising means of producing energy in the future. Because they do not consume fossil fuels they are considered environmentally friendly. Automobile manufacturers are already experimenting successfully with this technology and it is widely believed that fuel cells will become the energy source for automobiles in the near future.

With this unique kit, you can build your own experimental reversible fuel cell car to learn more about this energy source. With more than 30 experiments and demonstrations, provided either in the kit or on our web site, users will learn how a reversible fuel cell works to perform electrolysis as well as to create energy. The electricity required to activate electrolysis is created with a large solar cell included with the kit. During electrolysis, water is separated into hydrogen and oxygen and the resulting energy is stored as a gas. When needed, the gas is fed into the fuel cell, which then serves as the power source.

The Fuel Cell kit also includes a digital MultiMate which measures currents and voltage, allowing you to learn exactly what a fuel cell is and how it functions. The experiments and demonstrations explain the physics upon which this future technology is based.

Experiments
30 Experiments include: How to build a solar-powered car; Effects of direct and indirect radiation; Characteristics of a solar module; Electrolysis and its effect on water; Oxy-hydrogen test; How to construct and load a reversible fuel cell; Decomposition of water in the fuel cell; Qualitative and quantitative analysis of gas in a fuel cell; How efficient is electrolysis?; How light influences electrolysis; Solar electrolysis; Fuel cell-powered car. Add your own experiments!

Kit contains: Complete reversible fuel cell (hydrocycle system) • Wire • Motor • Chassis • Axle • Gas collector • 4 Wheels • Solar panel with support • Syringe • Tube • Digital multimeter • Test tube • Protective goggles • Labels • Bag of small parts for fuel cell • Bag of small electronic parts • Comprehensive lab manual with 30 experiments and demonstrations • (Additionally required: 1 quart of distilled water)

CYCLICAL TIMER

by @ . Filed under Electronic, Timer

This timer is a cyclic timer with a fixed total ON / OFF period of 1 minute, 30 minutes or 1 hour. Three on-board jumpers can be used to limit the total ON / OFF period to 1 minute, 30 minutes or 1 hour. You can then set the ON period of the cycle using the variable resistor. For example, if you set the variable resistor to 1/3 of its range, the ON period will be about 20 minutes and the OFF period will be about 40 minutes (assuming the jumper is set to the 1-hour mode).

Specifications:

* Supply voltage: 9 to 12V DC or 18V AC C.T. (2 x 9V AC) Transformer / 100mA
* Time adjustable from 15 seconds to 60 minutes
* Output Relay:
Maximum 3A at 110V AC or 24V DC
Maximum 1.5A at 220V AC
* PC board dimensions: 3.05″ x 1.80″
